Implementing dreams

My childhood dream is about to becoming more true!! I still remember when my high school Psychology teacher asked us, 'What're your dreams?' My classmates answered occupations like doctor, teacher, scientist, artist, etc. However, I replied, 'I want to be a world traveler'. Looking at the map, there're around 190 countries in the world and I wanted to visit as many of them as possible in my lifetime. One of my classmates listened to my answer and teased me, 'Wow, Lillian, you have already thought about retiring plan?' I laughed and everyone in the class laughed too. NO, we don't need to wait to travel until we get old and wealthy. We can dream big and start small, most importantly, start now.

I'm very excited to save up $$ and go traveling around the world. Of course it'll take some time to arrange and implement between work, family, and travel. My goal is to achieve it in five years to finish stepping on the seven continents. By doing that, I aim at experiencing various cultures, documenting inspirations/business ideas, discovering myself, and becoming more open-minded.

Traveling certainly brings me happiness, fulfillment, and opportunities. I always agree that education and travel are two of the greatest investments of my money and time in life. Growing up in Asia and living in N. America, I have checked out two wonderful 'continents' (can't find any other synonyms for this word..). My next goal is Europe -> Asia -> Australia. I have many interests but traveling is my biggest passion. I enjoy finding ways to spend the least but to see the most.

My another goal is contributing the best I can to the societies and communities. I want to volunteer in numerous places and meet different people. Then, I can call it 'my life'!

模特儿 Modeling

(2011) I recently discovered the top ten most profitable supermodels in the world that three of them from Brazil, and the Brazilian girls are really charming. It is a pity that no Asian girl or African girl can be ranked in the top ten yet. I heard that there are Liu Wen, Lv Yan, etc. from China. They are tall, not to mention, and their unique oriental faces. They should be able to compete with European faces. I hoped that one day, the world can get rid of the aesthetics defined by the West and have proud standards of independence.

(2020) But and then since the D&G Asian model using chopsticks to eat pizza incident, many Chinese people got mad about the joke. Zara model who has unique beauty appreciated by the top designer, had faced brutal criticism by her own people. Why would Chinese people embrace western appearance (big eyes, straight nose) more than their own beauty? As a Oriental girl who’s born in HK, I appreciate my own face because firstly it’s a gift from my parents, and secondly a Chinese model should look Chinese! What’s wrong and shameful with that? We should be proud of our outlooks. The true power lies with accepting differences in a harmonious way.

5 DEADLY WORDS USED BY WOMAN

1. FINE - this is the word women use to end an argument when she knows she is RIGHT &

YOU need to SHUT UP.

2. NOTHING - means SOMETHING & u need to be WORRIED.

3. GO AHEAD - this is a dare, not permission, do NOT do it.

4. WHATEVER - is a woman's way of saying SCREW YOU

5. THAT'S OK - she is thinking long & hard on HOW & WHEN you will pay for your mistake.

美 Beauty

Loving beauty is a woman's nature, especially the girlhood in her fancy years, and it should shine well. But girls with nearsightedness are really troubled, worrying about infection of bacteria by wearing contact lenses on the one hand, and the expensive cost of corrective vision surgery on the other hand. Is wearing glasses not so beautiful, reducing woman’s charm?

I don’t think so! Wearing glasses has its own characteristics and charm:)

Opportunities

After watching the 10-year-transformation story of Lv Yan, who is the Chinese Top Model in Paris and New York, I realize that the key to success is going for each opportunity we have. Lv Yan gives me the impression that she is optimistic, brave to try, and she says "yes" to every opportunity. Therefore, she gains a successful life. She does not only gain fame and money, but she also maximizes her personal value in the fashion industry. I hope I can also treasure all the valuable chances in my life and become an useful person=)

Lab 6 DEMs in ArcGIS

         I selected the approximate area of Sequoia National Forest. The map’s spatial reference is NAD 1983 UTM Zone 11 N and the central Meridian is -117. The forest is located in the southern Sierra Nevada mountains of California. The national forest is named for the majestic Giant Sequoia trees which populate 38 groves within the boundaries of the forest. It also covers 1,787.87 square miles (4,630.55 km²), and ranges in elevation from 1,000 feet (300 m) in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada to over 12,000 feet (3,700 m).The full extent of the area I posted is around -118.9014 degree for the left, -118.4361 degree for the right, 36.1952 degree for the top, 35.8693 degree for the bottom. Its columns and rows are 1463x1255. Its cell sizes X and Y are both 28.2525103 meters. There is only one band. Moreover, the area’s grid format is continuous source type. The slope map's mean is 18.96, while hillshade map’s mean is 170.208. Furthermore, the aspect map’s mean is 189.9564. Last but not least, I exaggerate the 3D map by multiplying 10 times with a base height of 10000, resulting in 100000 for Z unit conversion.

Lab 2 Interesting map reading

1.      What is the name of the quadrangle?
Beverly Hills quadrangle.

2.      What are the names of the adjacent quadrangles?
1. Canoga Park
2. Van Nuys
3. Burbank
4. Topanga
5. Hollywood
7. Venice
8. Inglewood

3.      When was the quadrangle first created?
Year of 1966

4.      What datum was used to create your map?
2 horizontal datum: North American Datum of 1927 and 1983
1 vertical datum: National Geodetic vertical datum of 1929

5. What is the scale of the map?
 R.F. = 1:24000

6. At the above scale, answer the following:
a) 5 centimeters on the map is equivalent to how many meters on the ground?
1/24000 = map/ground
 1/24000 = 5cm/ground
Ground= 5*24000cm
             = 120000cm
             = 1200m

b) 5 inches on the map is equivalent to how many miles on the ground?
1/24000= 5inches/ ground
Ground = 5*24000 inches
             = 120000inches
             = 1.8939 miles

c) one mile on the ground is equivalent to how many inches on the map?
1/24000= map/ 1mile
Map=1/ 24000 miles
       = (63360inches /1mile) * (1mile/ 24000)
       = 63360/ 24000 inches
       = 2.64 inches

d) three kilometers on the ground is equivalent to how many centimeters on the map?
1/24000= map/ 3km
Map= 3/24000 km
        = (100000cm/1km)*(3km/24000)
        = 12.5 cm

7. What is the contour interval on your map?
 20 feet

8. What are the approximate geographic coordinates in both degrees/minutes/seconds and decimal degrees of:
a) the Public Affairs Building;
Longitude (P.A.)= 118.30’-x
Distance( left- right)/Distance(left-P.A.)= 7.5’/x = 70cm/33cm
x= 3.54’
118.30’- 3.54’= 118.26.46’
0.46’=60”*0.46=27.6”
Therefore, the longitude is 118. 26’28”

Decimal degree:
 26minutes*60seconds= 1560 sec
1560 + 28= 1588 sec
1588/3600 sec=.441 degree
Therefore, the longitude is 118.441 degree

Latitude (P.A.)= 34.07’30”-x
Distance( up- down)/Distance( up-P.A.)= 7.5’/x = 28.7cm/ 11.7cm
X= 2.45’
34.07’30”- 2.45’= 34.4.55’30”
0.55’=60”*0.55=33”
34.04’63”=34.05’03”
Therefore, the latitude is 34.05’03”

Decimal degree:
5 minutes*60seconds= 300 sec
300 + 3= 303 sec
303/3600 sec=.0841 degree
Therefore, the latitude is 34.084 degree

b) the tip of Santa Monica pier;
Longitude= 118.29’52” (118.498 degree)
Latitude= 34.00’31” (34.009 degree)

c) the Upper Franklin Canyon Reservoir;
Longitude= 118.24’39”  (118.411 degree)
Latitude= 34.07’12” (34.12 degree)

9. What is the approximate elevation in both feet and meters of:
a) Greystone Mansion (in Greystone Park);
600feet- 20feet = 580 feet
580 feet = 176. 784 meters

b) Woodlawn Cemetery;
140 feet
42.672 meters

c) Crestwood Hills Park;
Around 630 feet
192.024 meters

10. What is the UTM zone of the map?
Zone 11.

11. What are the UTM coordinates for the lower left corner of your map?
361.5 Easting and 3763 Northing

12. How many square meters are contained within each cell (square) of the UTM gridlines?
1000*1000m= 1000000 square meters

13. Obtain elevation measurements, from west to east along the UTM northing 3771000, where the eastings of the UTM grid intersect the northing. Create an elevation profile using these measurements in Excel (hint: create a line chart). Figure out how to label the elevation values to the two measurements on campus. Insert your elevation profile as a graphic in your blog.

14. What is the magnetic declination of the map?
