Life Random Notes (Chin/Eng)

Keeping a diary becomes my habit. After writing for more than 13 years, I have collected more than ten large and small diaries. Ten years ago moving from Hong Kong to the United States, until now, I insist on writing Traditional Chinese, because I do not want to forget my root and culture. I love my native Cantonese culture, broad and profound!

The advantage of a handwritten diary is that you can record your mood at the time and get inspirations from it. The handwriting font will change with the mood. When you are in a good mood, you will write it neatly. If you are in a bad mood, the font will be messy like a storm. After many winds and frosts, it is so wonderful to look back at your own growth journey! Every time I encounter difficulties, I will write down my memories one by one, chat with myself, and I can mediate myself without even knowing it.

The sense of self-respect is so great! Everyone wants to be valued, paid attention, and respected. In fact, we ourselves are our best believers, viewers, and readers. Let me do an experiment. When you are accused by others, your first reaction is to hate the other party, want to repel the other party, or remain silent? I will try to pull away from the role, treat myself as someone else, calmly think about how to solve the problem, and make suggestions. This is more meaningful than scolding about accountability. I oppose violence, exploitation, and arrogance.

I’m not afraid of being alone, I ’m only afraid of pain and cold though (: P) For examples, when I was young, I would do my best to drill and hide under the table, in order to avoid the doctor to give me a painful injection; I waited to get the “achy”ear piercing until 19 years old; to reduce the number of heartaches from bad results, I tried to avoid input too much effort into loving relationships. I admire the great mothers who gave birth to their own flesh and blood babies after experiencing ten levels of pain.

As for preventing the cold, I would hibernate at home and plan the future in the warm bed. Sleeping is my skill, basically I can sleep soundly in any situation. Sleeping can improve beauty and relieve worries, why not do it more? Unless there’s loud gurgling of the person next to my pillow, or I drink caffeine that day, I will not be able to fall asleep and will have to wake up and read until I am sleepy.

There are still many people and things in life that puzzle me, but my curiosity is endless. Only holding this adventure heart makes me feel hopeful and interesting for tomorrow! Live and learn.

Stay Positive!!

Be happy, stay positive!!

You can do it!! Say a positive thing twenty times to yourself when you are feeling down. Your subconscious mind will sense it and brighten your mood!

Set short and simple goals and achieve them, then you'll feel happier about yourself.

If you try to achieve a big and challenging goal but you are not running while everyone else is running to achieve it, you'll feel frustrated. If so, there are two options: either you set a lower expectation that you can walk to meet it, or you keep a high expectation but make sure you run and be aggressive enough to satisfy it.

Words speak louder than pictures

As youtube, facebook and microblog are popular, blogs relied on writings, such as xanga and blogspot, lose their popularity. However, I still think words are more powerful than images. It's because writings show a person's knowledgeable thoughts, life philosophy, and level of writing skills. Sentences leave readers a space and time to imagine. Reading and writing cultivate patience in our minds. In contrast, eye-catching images and videos have already quickly exposed the realistic pictures and facts. Therefore, I would encourage people around me to keep the valuable habits of writing and reading.

Shadow Thought

Whether it's the sunny or rainy, night or day, joy or sorrow, you’re always here silently guarding me and following me closely. I am grateful to see you growing taller day by day, from the skinny monkey of the past to the slim lady of today. My Shadow, you are a good friend of my life ^^

感動 Touching Feeling

The moments that touched me, wave after wave, causing my tears came out unconsciously. I have always felt that I am a crybaby (shallow-eyed person), and the words of sorrow from others trigger my feeling like a knife to my heart, feeling the same way as others.

It should be fortunate that I haven't been grown into a wooden man or a snowman. Will I still be able to keep this pure touching feeling when I join the society in the future?

Non-white and Quiet Christmas

Well, let's continue this blog even I finish my GE class, Geog 7. I never thought that I can make a 3D map by myself using the software. Technology is really amazing nowadays, which help us a lot.

In this winter, I went on trips as usual. Traveling makes me feel relaxed and eye-opening. =)

No snowing for this Christmas; the weather is warmer than usual. And it seems quiet on the streets during Christmas Eve and day. I wondered," Where do all the people go?" The quiet atmosphere was totally different from the Asian cities, such as Hong Kong and Seoul, during this happy holiday. In Hong Kong, people tend to hang out to enjoy the beautiful decorations, go shopping, and go to theme parks, while in the U.S., just a few cars and people stay outside, even no lights are on in houses. I guess people here prefer going on trips rather than staying at their hometowns. This is just an interesting cultural difference I realized in this vacation=)

Lab 2 Interesting map reading

1.      What is the name of the quadrangle?
Beverly Hills quadrangle.

2.      What are the names of the adjacent quadrangles?
1. Canoga Park
2. Van Nuys
3. Burbank
4. Topanga
5. Hollywood
7. Venice
8. Inglewood

3.      When was the quadrangle first created?
Year of 1966

4.      What datum was used to create your map?
2 horizontal datum: North American Datum of 1927 and 1983
1 vertical datum: National Geodetic vertical datum of 1929

5. What is the scale of the map?
 R.F. = 1:24000

6. At the above scale, answer the following:
a) 5 centimeters on the map is equivalent to how many meters on the ground?
1/24000 = map/ground
 1/24000 = 5cm/ground
Ground= 5*24000cm
             = 120000cm
             = 1200m

b) 5 inches on the map is equivalent to how many miles on the ground?
1/24000= 5inches/ ground
Ground = 5*24000 inches
             = 120000inches
             = 1.8939 miles

c) one mile on the ground is equivalent to how many inches on the map?
1/24000= map/ 1mile
Map=1/ 24000 miles
       = (63360inches /1mile) * (1mile/ 24000)
       = 63360/ 24000 inches
       = 2.64 inches

d) three kilometers on the ground is equivalent to how many centimeters on the map?
1/24000= map/ 3km
Map= 3/24000 km
        = (100000cm/1km)*(3km/24000)
        = 12.5 cm

7. What is the contour interval on your map?
 20 feet

8. What are the approximate geographic coordinates in both degrees/minutes/seconds and decimal degrees of:
a) the Public Affairs Building;
Longitude (P.A.)= 118.30’-x
Distance( left- right)/Distance(left-P.A.)= 7.5’/x = 70cm/33cm
x= 3.54’
118.30’- 3.54’= 118.26.46’
0.46’=60”*0.46=27.6”
Therefore, the longitude is 118. 26’28”

Decimal degree:
 26minutes*60seconds= 1560 sec
1560 + 28= 1588 sec
1588/3600 sec=.441 degree
Therefore, the longitude is 118.441 degree

Latitude (P.A.)= 34.07’30”-x
Distance( up- down)/Distance( up-P.A.)= 7.5’/x = 28.7cm/ 11.7cm
X= 2.45’
34.07’30”- 2.45’= 34.4.55’30”
0.55’=60”*0.55=33”
34.04’63”=34.05’03”
Therefore, the latitude is 34.05’03”

Decimal degree:
5 minutes*60seconds= 300 sec
300 + 3= 303 sec
303/3600 sec=.0841 degree
Therefore, the latitude is 34.084 degree

b) the tip of Santa Monica pier;
Longitude= 118.29’52” (118.498 degree)
Latitude= 34.00’31” (34.009 degree)

c) the Upper Franklin Canyon Reservoir;
Longitude= 118.24’39”  (118.411 degree)
Latitude= 34.07’12” (34.12 degree)

9. What is the approximate elevation in both feet and meters of:
a) Greystone Mansion (in Greystone Park);
600feet- 20feet = 580 feet
580 feet = 176. 784 meters

b) Woodlawn Cemetery;
140 feet
42.672 meters

c) Crestwood Hills Park;
Around 630 feet
192.024 meters

10. What is the UTM zone of the map?
Zone 11.

11. What are the UTM coordinates for the lower left corner of your map?
361.5 Easting and 3763 Northing

12. How many square meters are contained within each cell (square) of the UTM gridlines?
1000*1000m= 1000000 square meters

13. Obtain elevation measurements, from west to east along the UTM northing 3771000, where the eastings of the UTM grid intersect the northing. Create an elevation profile using these measurements in Excel (hint: create a line chart). Figure out how to label the elevation values to the two measurements on campus. Insert your elevation profile as a graphic in your blog.
